Following my trip with American Airlines from Chicago/O'Hare to Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Trip Report Here), our volunteer team headed straight for our volunteer camp site where many other Global Brigades team from different universities in USA were staying. The camp site would be about an hour drive away from the airport, away from the dangers of the Tegucigalpa city. The Global Brigades even had extra security measures, such as having police/army guards for each brigades, just in case. But this trip report will contain pictures from our visit to Tegucigalpa.

아메리칸항공을 타고 시카고/오헤어에서 온두라스 테구시갈파에 왔습니다(탑승기는 여기에~). 우리 자원봉사팀은 바로 테구시갈파공항에서 동북쪽으로 1시간 떨어진 외딴곳에 위치되있는 캠프장으로 갔습니다. 그 캠프장에는 다른 학교들에서 온 글로벌 브리게이즈 팀들도 같이 하숙하는 곳이였습니다. 도시에서 떨어져 있는 이유는 단지 테구시갈파가 그리 안전하지는 않은 도시이기 때문입니다. 치안과 범죄문제로 앓고 있는 도시죠. 온두라스에서 일주일 있는 동안 테구시갈파는 공항에서 오갈때 두번, 그리고 산책할때 한번 갔습니다.

Our leader John who lead us into our rooms. There were Global Business Brigades, Medical Brigades, and Architecture Brigades (that's us) from three different schools that day.

저의 팀외에 다른 학교에서 온 팀들도 있었습니다. 신기한것은 UCLA 에서 의료팀으로 온 한국계 미국여자애를 만났는데 한국에서 똑같은 국민학교를 나왔더군요... 헐.

The rooms looked like this. To be honest, I expected much worse conditions.

The first morning in Honduras. The day started out chilly and the weather was crisp.

온두라스의 둘째날 아침이 밝았습니다. 날씨는 꽤 쌀쌀했습니다.

A global brigades member who would be directing to our site today, a good two hour drive away.

여기서 두시간 떨어져 있는 우리 작업장으로 인도해줄분.

We boarded a van that would fit all of us. It would be a fairly bumpy 2-hour ride to our project site.

우리 작업장으로 대려다줄 밴차. 하루에 4시간이 지겹게 비포장도로를 달렸죠.

We crossed a river, but there was a road within the waters!

There were couple more streams that we crossed on our way to/from our project site.

우리 작업장으로 갈때 한두번 정도 하천위를 지나갔습니다.

Arrived at our project site! Our project was to help build the foundation for the new school for the community in the area. The construction actually started about two months ago and the project was set to finish by end of 2011. Scroll all the way down this trip report and I will provide the link for the finished school.

드디어 우리 작업장에 도착했습니다. 저의 프로젝트는 이곳 마을에 학교를 지어주는 프로젝트였습니다. 당연히 일주일 이내에 다 짓지는 못하죠. 건설작업은 2달전부터 시작하여서 2011년 말에 끝나는 프로젝트입니다. 한달에 한번씩 미국에서 팀이 와서 자원봉사하는 식으로 되어진 프로젝트입니다. 저의 임무는 학교 빌딩의 기초를 단단히 새우는 일이였습니다.

Half of the building already had bricks going up. The other half still needed concrete floor placement.

빌딩 반은 벌써 벽돌들 올라가고 있었습니다. 대부분 바닥에 아직 콘크리트가 필요했습니다.

For lunch, it was pupusas and some cookies and PB&J.

이번주 매일 온드라스식 푸푸사를 먹습니다. 푸푸사는 엘살바도르의 음식이며 치즈와 때로는 고기가 들어있는 우리나라의 전같은 스타일의 전통음식입니다.

That's the local homemade pupusas brought to us by women of the village.

Today we worked on the other sections of this floor.

오늘은 이곳 바닥의 다른 부분을 콘크리트로 매울겁니다.

While we were working on the concrete, our buddies were working on the brick walls on the other side.

우리가 빌딩 한쪽에서 콘크리트로 매울 무렵에 다른 한쪽에서 동료들이 벽돌 작업을 합니다.

All of this will be filled with concrete to serve as an outdoor patio.

The school is situated on a top of a hill, as you can see.

Fast forward to fourth day of the week.

오늘은 추웠던 네번째 날.

Today was unexpectedly cold. It was foggy everywhere also especially given the high altitude.

프로젝트장에 안개와 추운 날씨 때문에 작업이 쉽지는 않았답니다.

We made some great progress on the walls! The second classroom's side wall had been complete, just waiting for columns to be filled with concrete.

그럼에도 불구하고 많은일을 해냈습니다. 마지막교실의 벽돌작업을 끝냈습니다.

And the last day of work! The weather forecast looked great for today.

작업 마지막 날의 아침이 밝았습니다. 오늘의 날씨는 매우 좋아보였습니다.

Today, we worked on filling the floor of the last classroom with concrete panels.

오늘은 콘크리트 만들고 교실 바닥에 부으는 작업만 했습니다.

It surely takes a strength and patience to make a good concrete.

콘크리트 만드는 작업은 그리 쉽지가 않습니다. 힘도 쎄야되고요.

After the last day of work, we visited the village that we were building the school for.

마지막날의 작업이 끝나고 학교를 인수받을 마을도 방문하였습니다.

A coffee was offered by one of the local women.

마을의 어느 아주머니가 커피를 끓여주셨습니다.

They served us beans on tortilla-like bread.

그리고 볶은 콩과 또띠야같은 빵을 주셨습니다.

I do not recall what this was, but I think it was a machine to grind corn to make tortilla.

이게 뭐였는지는 잊어먹었지만 아마도 옥수수를 갈아서 또띠야를 만드는 것 같았습니다.

On the day before the departure from Honduras, we hiked up the mountain by the city of Tegucigalpa where the statute of Jesus was located in.

온두라스 떠나기 전날 테구시갈파의 산에 있는 예수상으로 산책에 나섰습니다.

And that's the national stadium of Honduras, where I think Olimpia plays.

And the statue of Jesus, or they call it Cristo Picacho was visible.

It's built on top of the mountain so that it's visible from just about anywhere in Tegucigalpa.

I think that was an elementary school down there. They were playing some kind of sports game.

Kinda like Statue of Liberty, this statue was built on top of an interesting structure.

We were now headed to eat some Pupusas!

이제 푸푸사를 먹으러 향합니다.

The restaurant that we ate in was Virginia's Pupusas.

우리가 먹었던 레스토랑은 Virginia's Pupusas 였습니다.

First the side dishes came. They were pickled onions and cabbages.

우선 푸푸사를 곁들어 먹는 반찬이 나왔습니다. 그것들은 절인 양파와 배추였습니다.

And the highlight of today.. the Pupusas! Each pupusas had copious amount of cheese that was very unique in taste and addicting. The pupusas are made with rice flour, so the texture was very interesting.

드뎌 푸푸사가 나왔습니다. 푸푸사 하나하나마다 치즈가 듬쁙 들어있었고 맛도 독특하면서도 중독성이 있었습니다. 쌀가루로 만들어져서 씹는 느낌도 흥미했습니다.
