After a 18-hour long journey from Korea to Istanbul via China Southern, I was ready to explore Istanbul.
중국남방항공 타고 서울에서 이스탄불로 힘들게 왔습니다.
My friends who live in Istanbul picked me up from Ataturk Airport at 08:00 local time. I was thankful that they were able to pick me up even though they live far away from the airport.
아침 8시쯤 약속시간에 이스탄불 현지에서 거주하는 친구들이 대려와줬습니다. 이스탄불 도심에서 조금 멀리 떨어져 있는 곳에 사는 친구들이 공항까지 와줬다니 고맙네요.
I wanted to stay in the hostel in Sultanahmet, so that I could be near most of the tourist spots of Istanbul.
여기는 저의 호스텔이 있는곳, 술타나멧입니다. 친구 집에서 묵을수도 있었지만 이스타불 관광 명소 근처에서 묵고 싶어서 여기에서 묵기로 결정하였습니다.
Sultanahmet is the place where most tourists to Istanbul go to. It's close to the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace Museum, and other famous landmarks of Istanbul.
술타나멧은 서울의 삼청동/인사동 이라고 할까요? 이스탄불에서 가장 touristic 한 곳입니다. 하기아 소피아를 비롯한 많은 유명한 명소들이 모여있지요.
Going up the hill from my hostel you can see Hagia Sophia right away.
저의 호스텔에서 언덕위로 하기아 소피아가 있습니다.
I decided to go to Hagia Sophia later and went for Topkapi Palace Musuem (where all of the Sultans of Ottoman Empire lived).
하기아 소피아는 나중에 가고 친구들과 톱가프 궁전 (옛날 술탄들이 살던 경복궁 같은 궁전이죠) 에 갑니다.

For brunch we had Ispanakli Borek and fruits~
아침겸 점심으로 Ispanakli Borek (시금치, 치즈가 들어간 파이) 을 먹었습니다.

Turkish architecture seemed as if there was an uncanny mix of oriental and occidental architecture.
터키의 건축은 동양식과 서양식이 잘 섞여있는것 같았습니다. 건물들 분위기가 유럽 필이 나면서도 동양의 궁전 느낌도 납니다.
From here there was a great view of the Bosphorus Strait.
어느 방인지 까먹었지만 이 방에서 보스포러스 해협 뷰가 장난 아닙니다.

We went to get lunch near the Topkapi Palace near Sultanahmet Station LRT.
톱가프 궁전을 다 둘러보고 점심을 먹으러 나옵니다.
I tried Ayran for the first time. I couldn't really finish it.
터키인들이 자주 먹는다는 Ayran. 요거트 드링크입니다. 한번 먹어봤습니다. 맛은... 별로 였습니다.
I had Kofte for the first time also, and it was great. The bread was unlimited, and the tomatoes/beans & olive oil salad was perfect side for the dish.
점심으로 Kofte (터키의 미트볼 같은 음식) 을 먹었습니다. 터키 레스토랑에서는 빵은 무한 리필입니다. 터키인들은 빵을 많이 먹거든요.
저 뒤에는 올리브 오일과 식초로 데쳐진 토마토와 콩들입니다.
The restaurant name is Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi and best known for the kofte. For anyone who visits Istanbul for the first time it is a must-visit place.
여기는 레스토랑의 주방. Kofte 와 야채무침이 즐비하네요.
레스토랑 이름은 Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi (한국어로 그대로 번역하면 '역사적인 술타나멧 미트볼') 입니다. 이스탄불에서 가장 유명한 Kofte 집이죠. 꼭 와보시길!
There were protests everywhere in the city against the Turkish prime minister that day (The demonstrations in Istanbul actually started the day that I arrived.) My friends and I followed the crowd toward Taksim Square, when it was still peaceful.
In order to get to Taksim Square from Sultanahmet, one must cross this bridge.
그날 터키 곳곳에 터키 총리인 타입 에르도안을 반대하는 시위/데모가 일어나고 있었죠. 제 친구들도 가고 싶어해서 저도 따라갔습니다.
데모의 중심지였던 탁심광장으로 가기위해서 이 다리를 건너야 했습니다. 저 뒤에 갈라타 타워를 지나면 탁심광장입니다.

탁심광장에 도착하기도 전에 곳곳에서 마스크를 파는 사람들이 많았습니다.
Near Galatas Tower, the streets were full of people demoing.
갈라타스 타워 근처에 탁심광장으로 가는 길은 데모하는 사람들로 꽉 차여 있었습니다.
People everywhere were chanting the Turkish PM to step down.
여기 저기 사람들이 많았습니다.
I didn't want to get too involved with the demo, so I went back away from Taksim Square toward Galatas Tower.
데모에서 빠져나와서 친구들과 갈라타스 타워에 갔습니다. 괜히 이스탄불에서 다치고 싶지 않았거든요 ㅎㅎ 제 부모님 걱정하실까봐 카톡으로 안전하다고 말씀드렸습니다.
Galatas Tower was built during Constantinople's times. Nowadays there's an elevator inside the structure so there's no need for tourists to walk up the tower. The view is great from the top of the tower. Amazing views of Istanbul and Bosphorus Strait are worth the visit.
That day, I heard the sounds of protests all the way from Taksim Square.
갈라타 타워는 무려 600년 전 콘스탄티노플시대에 지어진 타워입니다. 지금은 안에 엘레베이터가 장착되어 있어서 걸어서 올라갈 필요가 없습니다. 올라가서 보이는 뷰는 굉장하죠. 아름다운 이스탄불 전경이 보입니다.
그래도 탁심광장에서 에르도안 총리를 반대하는 함성들이 여기까지 들립니다 ㅠㅠ

여기서 술타나멧의 모스크들도 보입니다.
This is the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) which is not far away from Hagia Sophia.
여기는 하기아 소피아 반대편의 블루 모스크~
There are times when the mosques are exclusively for Muslims. The dress code is very strict for the mosques. Appropriate, respectful clothings must be worn and one must always take off shoes before entering.
모스크는 처음으로 들어가봅니다.
이스탄불의 모스크들은 praying time 이 1 시간씩 다섯번이 있는것 같았습니다. 이때는 모스크를 이슬람교 신자들을 위해서만 개방하죠. 관광자들은 이 이외의 시간에 들어갈수 있습니다.
슬리브가 없는 셔츠를 입은 남성이나 바지가 너무 짧은 여성들은 때로는 안 들여보내 줍니다. 들어갈때는 신발을 벗고 들어가야 합니다.
This is the 1500 year old structure called Hagia Sophia, the edifice I have always wanted to visit ever since learning about it in 9th grade world history class.
하기아 소피아 안에도 들어가봤습니다. 건물 자체가 1500년 됬는데도 아직도 서있다니 대단하네요.
Hagia Sophia was a church during Byzantines, but when Ottoman Empire took over current-day Istanbul, the building was turned into a mosque. Since Muslim Qua'ran forbids any figures of human inside mosques, all portraits/paintings on the walls were covered up.
Nowadays, work is being done to recover the paintings that were lost.
하기아 소피아는 원래 비잔티움 시대때는 성당이였죠. 하지만 오스만 제국 시대때는 모스크로 바뀌였습니다. 이슬람의 모스크에는 사람의 형체이나 얼굴의 그림이 있으면 안되기 때문에 하기아 소피아 내부의 성화(이콘)들은 석회칠로 덮어지고 십자가도 떼어졌습니다.
지금은 그 성화들을 복원하기 위한 작업이 아직도 한창이죠.

The floor of Hagia Sophia was strangely comfortable. It was very slippery and cool.
하기아 소피아 바닥에서 잠시 앉았습니다. 바닥이 매끈하고 시원해서 더운 날씨도 잠시 피할겸 같이온 친구와 잠시 쉬었습니다.
Hagia Sophia closes every Monday, so please plan accordingly! It also closes 17:00 everyday.
사람도 별로 없으니 쿨쿨~
하기아 소피아는 월요일마다 닫으니 주의하시기 바랍니다. 그리고 매일 5-6시쯤은 닫습니다.
We went to grab dinner with our friends just across the river from Sultanahmet.
친구들과 저녁을 먹으러 다시 다리를 건넜습니다.
Fish markets everywhere! It indeed smelled like one along the river.
술타나멧에서 다리를 건너면 해산물 시장이 여기저기 있습니다. 바다 냄새도 나구요.
This is traditional way of eating in Turkey. Meals are served in small side dishes and the guests choose the side dishes they like.
레스토랑에서는 웨이터들이 반찬(?)같은 접시들을 들고 다닙니다. 원하는 반찬을 가져가면 됩니다.
Most selections were seafood related.
모든 음식들이 다 생선류였습니다.
Yeni Rakı Turkey's booze.
이스탄불의 소주같은 술, 예니라크.
And the sea bass which was perfect.
그리고 맛나게 먹었던 sea bass 요리~
Next day we headed for a restaurant at the coast of Bosphorus Strait in northern part of Istanbul.
다음날 아침 브런치를 먹으러 보스포러스 해협 근처의 식당으로 향합니다.
This is typical Turkish breakfast here. It consists of a lot of breads, cheese, olives, butter, and pickled vegetables.The cheese on the fry pan you see on the left is called menemen and the butter smothered with honey on the center is called bal kaymak.
이것은 터키인들의 아침 식사죠. 우선 왼쪽에 많은 빵들이 보이고 그옆에는 후라이팬으로 튀긴 치즈, 일반 치즈, 올리브, 허니와 밀크 크림 (bal kaymak), 그리고 토마토와 야채들이 있습니다. 맛있게 먹었습니다.
특히 저 bal kaymak... 너무나도 맛있게 먹었습니다.
That's the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. The other side is Asian continent. The cafe we ate at is called Kale. Highly recommended place!
저기 보이는 다리는 Fatih Sultan Mehmet 대교입니다. 다리를 건너면 아시아 대륙입니다.
참고로 여기는 Kale 이라는 카페같은 식당입니다. 한번 와보세요.
The breads were delicious!
빵들이 진짜 맛있었습니다. 저 빵 진짜로 좋아하거든요.
This dish (the cheese in fry pan), is Menemen. The most delicious thing ever!
이 음식은 치즈, 토마토소스, 계란, 소세지가 들어간 메네멘 (Menemen) 입니다. 터키식 casserole 이라고 보시면 됩니다.
Bal Kaymak. I did not know honey and butter went together this well.
bal kaymak의 맛에 감탄해서 한번더 찍습니다. 버터처럼 보이지만 버터가 아닙니다 ㅎㅎ
We walked toward Istanbul downtown after stuffing ourselves.
아침을 다먹고 친구들과 산책도 해볼겸 보스포러스 해협을 끼고 도심을 향해서 걸어갑니다.
We got to Bebek Mahallesi. From here you can spot both Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.
얼마 걷지 않아 Bebek Mahallesi 라는 곳에 도착합니다. Bosphorus 다리와 Fatih Sultan Mehmet 다리가 둘다 보이는 평화로운 곳입니다.
We got to eat some Mulberries too!
친구가 나무에서 따다준 mulberry (뽕나무 오디) 도 먹어봅니다.
Before going to Taksim Square to check out the protest scenes, we went to Kanyon Mall. It's located in Besiktas part of Istanbul.
탁심광장으로 가기전에 들려본 이 백화점은 Kanyon 이라는 곳입니다. 이스탄불 유럽쪽 중심의 Besiktas 에 있는 대형 백화점이죠. 신기하게 생겼습니다.
And the graffitis start now as we walk toward Taksim Square...

There were a lot of foreigners touring the scene. A lot of people were taking pictures of the scenes.
많은 사람들이 낙서글을 사진에 담고 있었습니다. 터키인 말고도 외국인 사람도 많았습니다. 대부분 데모를 하러 온게 아니라 데모를 구경온 사람들이죠.
ATM machines were all destroyed and looted.

There were a lot of V for Vendetta masks.

The Taksim Square was completely overtaken.
탁심광장의 데모 현장은 이러했습니다.
There were angry people everywhere protesting against Tayyip Erodogan.
에르도안 총리를 반대하는 사람들이 여기저기 깃발을 들고 있었죠.
그들의 깃발에는 아타튀르크의 얼굴이 그려져 있었습니다. '우리는 아타튀르크의 사람들이다' 라는 뜻이죠.

Some good citizens were picking up debris from the scene.
이 와중에도 어느 시민들은 뒷수습하느라 바쁩니다. 전날 부숴진 유리조각이나 유리병들을 줍고 있었죠.
My friends jokingly told me that I picked a great time to visit Istanbul.
친구들이 말했습니다.. 참 좋은 시간때 맞춰서 잘 왔다고..
I feel bad for this car owner.
이차의 소유자는 참으로 안됐네요.
The clean up activity was on all around.
망가진 버스 주변에도 청소 작업이 한창입니다.
They tried to use this bus as a barricade.
경찰들이 못 들어오게 막는 거죠.

버스도 모자라 울타리도 갔다 놓았습니다.
This police car was completely overtaken by graffitis.
이것도 경찰차.. 완전 낙서로 뒤덮혀있었죠.

As time passed more people were heading toward Taksim Square.
시간이 지나자 사람들이 탁심광장으로 몰려듭니다.
I still had opportunities to eat some Turkish ice cream
데모 와중에도 터키 아이스크림은 먹어둡니다.

출출해서 친구들과 이스락 햄버거도 먹었습니다.

저녁시간이 다되자 탁심광장은 사람들로 꽉 차여 있었습니다.
The building on the right is the building Tayyip Erodogan proposed to demolish.
심지어 저 빌딩 위에서도 사람들이 데모 중이네요.
It's written 'We will not give in'
저 빌딩에는 '물러서지 않을 것이다' 라고 써져 있었습니다.

It was still a peaceful demonstration by early June. It probably turned into a war zone by July...
이때 까지만 해도 탁심광장은 peaceful demonstration 이었습니다. 지금은 완전 전쟁터일지도...

여기 저기 '타입 물러나라' '타입 사직해라' 외치는 소리들이 들립니다.

We got out and headed straight for Sultanahmet.
이제 탁심 광장을 빠져나오기 위해 술타나멧으로 걸어갑니다.

A breakfast provided by Sultan Hostel. They had unlimited supplies of bread, cheese, olives, vegetables, cereals, milk, and juices. I highly recommend Sultan Hostel. The owners were very nice and since they moved from Spain, they spoke Spanish. The rooms were very clean and I had a pleasant overall experience with them.
제가 술타나멧에서 머물렀던 Sultan Hostel 에서 무료로 나오는 아침식사입니다. 식사는 아침 8시 부터 10시 반까지 나옵니다. 탁심광장이 아무리 난리법석이여도 술타나멧은 평온한 아침입니다.
Sultan Hostel.. 강력 추천합니다. 방도 깨끗했구요, 스탭분들 다 친절했습니다. Sultan Hostel 의 운영자들 사실 스페인에서 건너오신 분들이라 스페인어를 하십니다. 스페인어를 아는 저도 반가워서 스페인어로 얘기도 했습니다.
중국, 일본, 한국에서 오신 분들도 적지 않습니다.
Some Coco puffs, bread, cheese, and juice will do for the day.
터키식 아침입니다. 치즈와 토마토, 올리브와 빵이 나옵니다. 씨리얼과 오랜지 쥬스도 나오고요.
Sultan Hostel 말고도 다른 호스텔도 이렇게 아침이 나오는 것으로 알고 있습니다.

I visited the new mosque before I left Istanbul that day.
마지막 날이니 근처 뉴 모스크에 한번 들려 봅니다. 이스람교 신자가 아니지만 한번 구경할려구요.
