Fifth time to Hong Kong
[Korean Air] KE 601 ICN-HKG (Seoul/Incheon->Hong Kong) trip report
 [대한항공] KE 601 서울/인천->홍콩/첵립콕 탑승기

Korean Air B737 is the way to go.

KE 601 ICN-HKG (Seoul/Incheon->Hong Kong)
DEP ICN 12 JUN 2013 13:45
ARR HKG 12 JUN 2013 16:50
Flight Duration: 4:05
Aircraft: B737-900ER

I had some work to do in Hong Kong while working in Korea. At that time, there were four daily flights to Hong Kong with Korean Air. The early morning flight was with B747, second flight with A330, third flight (mine) with B737-900ER, and last flight with A380-800.
I wanted to take the A380 flight, but that meant getting into Hong Kong much later at night. I wanted to grab dinner with friends in Hong Kong, so I decided take the B737-900ER flight which departed from ICN at 13:45.

Incheon Airport had been getting very busy in the recent years.  I hope they work on getting the Terminal 2 finished on time.

The Korean Air A380-800 was pulling into the gate right next to my flight.

This big blue whale will serve as KE 11 to Los Angeles Airport.

And right next to the A380-800 was my Hong Kong-bound plane in Gate 8.

In Korean airports, they do not allow outside drinks to be brought in (even post-security). I bought a Mr. Smoothie couple minutes before boarding time and the agent kindly advised me of the policy. I ended up hanging around for good 10-15 minutes to finish the smoothie.

Since it was a smaller plane, the gate used only one boarding bridge.

That's the copilot.

The plane was only a couple of months old. Can you say "new plane smell"?

That window seat is mine.

To the left of me was an Indonesia-bound Korean Air A330.

The Korean Air's new economy seats were installed on their medium-range B737s. The AVOD systems on B737, although a bit smaller than the ones on B777 or A380, is basically the same thing as the ones on the bigger KE planes.

Today, there weren't any Cantonese-speaking flight attendants. Only the Mandarin-speaking ones.

We took-off to the north and quickly turned to the west.

The new Boeing Sky Interior mood lighting looks great.

Choices for lunch was Bibimbap, beef, or fish. I chose fish for the in-flight meal.

It turned out to be one of the worst in-flight meals I've ever had. The fish was way too dry.

I watched "Django Unchained" for the movie.

I've always been on bigger planes with Korean Air, so it's a new feeling to be on their B737s.

Hong Kong's weather was rather cloudy today with a bit of rain.

We landed from the west side of the Hong Kong Airport Island.

At the baggage claim.

To save some money we took the A11 bus toward the Hong Kong Island. The fare would be 40 HKD each way. One way ticket for the Airport Express would set us back 100 HKD each.

At the Fortress Hill MTR Station.

At Wan Chai. Looking at I.M. Pei's signature Bank of Hong Kong Tower.

Me at the Victoria Peak, awed by the scenery of Hong Kong skyline.

Today I am headed for Pekanbaru, Indonesia, a city in Sumatra Island less than one hour flight away from Singapore. Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau, one of the many provinces of Indonesia. More details on Pekanbaru on next trip report, (Silk Air MI 252 Singapore->Pekanbaru).

The plane I would be taking from Hong Kong to Singapore is SQ 001, B777-300ER.  SQ 001 is a part of Singapore Airlines' two-segment San Francisco to Singapore flight with about two-hour stopover in Hong Kong Airport.  The flight departs around 1AM from SFO, arriving at HKG at 6AM before departing for SIN at 8AM.

In order to get to airport on time with less budget, I decided to take the Hong Kong city bus A11 from Fortress Hill at 05:00. I arrived in airport at around 06:30.

At the upper deck of the A11 bus.. looking toward Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Above the Stone Cutter's Bridge, my first time on the bridge.

The Tsing Ma Bridge to Lantau Island.

And a bit later, arrived at Hong Kong Airport!

Heading toward Singapore Airlines check-in counters

At the time Singapore Airlines counters were located across from the Korean Air counters

Economy class line for Singapore Airlines check-in counters. I was the only one at the time who was checking-in.

The boarding passes for Singapore Airlines SQ 001 and Silk Air MI 252.  The Silk Air's boarding pass was also printed on the Singapore Airlines boarding pass template.

The food court which I always visit whenever I come to Hong Kong Airport.

As I walked toward my gate, that's when I found out that my plane today would be a special livery one.

It's one of SQ's Star Alliance livery B777-300ER.

The flight was getting ready for boarding.

Boarding started at 7:25AM at Gate 16.

I was one of the firsts to board the plane.

You can't probably tell from the picture, but the interior of the plane seemed a bit old and worn out. This was especially visible in the economy section. My seat's cover looked discolored and parts of the fabric was ripped.

My window seat, 43A

The AVOD system on Singapore Airlines economy seats. Their TV on economy seats are probably one of the bigger ones out there among top-class airlines.

The cabin scene while everyone pours in. There were many passengers traveling from San Francisco holding boarding pass cards while boarding.

Perhaps a Beijing-bound Hainan Airlines?

At this time, the flight attendants were distributing hot towels to each passengers.

Here's the menu. I can even see what was offered on the SFO->HKG route.

Here's HKG->SIN route choices. I eventually chose Char Siew Fun Quin.

And we took off toward the west.

Flying up and away from Lantau Island..

You can spot the Airport to the left.

Not too long after take-off, the breakfast was served.

This was the Chinese breakfast option, Char Siew Fun Quinn.

Dim Sums for breakfast wasn't a bad idea. Overall, the meal tasted pretty good, not too oily nor salty.

It was also my first time ordering Singapore Sling.  It was early in the morning for a booze, but I just wanted to try it. I passed out after drinking it all.

Flying over South China Sea..

After dozing off from time to time, I've woken up as the plane arrived into Singapore Airport.

It would be my first time arriving into Terminal 3.

It was my first time inside Terminal 3 and I was thoroughly impressed with the building. It was one of the best terminals I've ever been to.

The terminal was very quiet and the atmosphere felt very comfy.

Very clean looking immigrations floor.
